Dear John

I just finished reading Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. Whoa!
(Spoiler Alert: I am not reveiling the ending, but my reaction might give some of it away. Hope not.)

I love that one of the two main characters, Savannah, is from Lenoir. Some of the story even takes place there. After teaching in there for the past 3 years, part of my heart belongs to Lenoir for sure. I also find it interesting that she does Horse Therapy with special needs children there, considering they really have that there. I have never seen that in any other town. In fact, I recommended that one of my students try it a couple years back.

Any true North Carolinian would also appreciate the setting primarily being in Wilmington and the connection of UNC-Chapel Hill. I think that has alot to do with why I love his books so much. They are sincere love stories, but are clean and most importantly take place in NC.

Unfortunately, with the movie coming out this week, I read that most of the filming took place in SC. Why do they do that. NC is beautiful.

Another huge connection I made with the book was John's fathers coin collection. My dad is a coin dealer and has been reading Greysheets every day as long as I can remember. He also gets coins graded almost weekly by PCGS, all mentioned in the book.  However, it wasn't an obsession for my daddy. Aside from farming in our earlier years, it was his business. It is how we now put food on the table, our way of life. I think my daddy is brilliant and I am in awe of his historical knowledge of coins.

Anyway, the ending got me. I guess I saw it coming. Not sure. I guess I am afraid to admit it. He was definately loyal to our country. You can't knock John for that. However, he was strong. I don't think I could have gone back. Then later with a broken heart, what choice did he have.

The story almost came full circle. I have probably said too much. You will just have to read it. I hope the movie doesn't let me down.
